Trout Fishing
The Timbers at Chama is centrally located to some of the best trout fishing waters in New Mexico and Colorado. Fish one of our private mountain lakes or streams, or fish for wild Browns and Brook trout or bright Rainbows in the nearby Brazos, Chavez and Chama Rivers. For a great group outing, the Timbers at Chama will be glad to arrange ½ day or all day charters to Heron Lake in pursuit of tasty Kokanee Salmon or lunker Lake Trout up to 20 pounds! In Southern Colorado, a short drive away, you’ll find pristine alpine lakes and the legendary Conejos River. With so many angling opportunities in and around the Timbers at Chama, it is fair to call the Chama Valley New Mexico’s fishing paradise.
Been dreaming of catching that trophy 22” rainbow trout? Our private
Rocky Mountain lakes with crystal clear water are home to fish well over
20” inches. Have your camera ready: Prior to taking your trout
out of the water, grab your photo, measure your prize, and release him
to the wild. We can assist in making this memory last with a lifelike
trophy mount while you and your trophy trout live on for another adventure.
Packing your binoculars and lunch is a must. Wildlife viewing is part of the Timbers at Chama high-mountain fishing experience. Elk, mule deer, and bear inhabit the area and are often seen in the open parks and waters edge. Enjoy lunch, in the high country and rest under the shade of your favorite spot. Watch for the many beautiful birds that also enjoy these lakes. Eagles, geese and ducks will often join you for a drink.
Relax, and take it all in - it doesn’t get any better than this.

Handling Fish to be Released
- “Land” the fish as quickly as possible to avoid stress.
- Leave fish in the water or in a dip net – Do not drag them out on the bank.
- Grasp the hook or lure firmly (preferably with pliers or forceps) and twist slightly.
- If the hook does not come out easily and you must handle the fish, wet hands first. Turn the fish on its side or back – the fish should lay more still with its belly upward.
- If photographing a fish, handle minimally as described above and return to water as quickly as possible.
- If the fish does not swim off immediately, poke it gently with your rod tip.
Fish for Mounts/Taxidermy
Fish are no longer to be kept for mounting purposes! However, we can have a replica mount made for you to preserve the memory.
For the most precise duplication of your trophy, photograph the fish and measure its overall length & girth. (AGAIN, DO THIS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.) Have your camera, etc. ready prior to removing the fish from the water. Supply us with a photo and measurements and we can have the mount shipped directly to you for approximately $13.00/inch (shipping included). Length only, even estimated, is sufficient if necessary.
